Competency Description: The Student Learning and Development competency area addresses the concepts and principles of student development and learning theory. This includes the ability to apply theory to improve and inform student affairs and teaching practice.

Outcomes: 
  • Describe major categories of student development theories and the conditions that
    facilitate learning.
  • Recognize how identity influences student development.
  • Identify and take advantage of opportunities for curriculum and program development.
  • Critique the dominant group perspective present in some models and theories of student learning and modify for use in practice.

Experience Documentation: 
Having grown up in a religious household and community, I wanted to look at faith salience in college students, specifically looking at how students move through different phases of their faith while being exposed to new people and demographics. As a partner-project, we created a theory of Faith Salience.

Each week of EAF 484 we discussed unique student populations and how best to serve them. As a non-traditional graduate student myself, I could understand and empathize with students who are typically under-served or who's best interests are not in mind of administrators. Below are my reflections of various student populations.
